The second annual Captiva Triathlon will be held Sunday, September 16 at South Seas Island Resort. It consists of a quarter-mile swim, a 10-mile bike ride and a 5K run. These pileated woodpeckers have been quite active lately. This pair is around almost every morning and are so distinctive with their red crests. They can be very vocal as well. Pileated woodpeckers are one of the largest woodpecker species in North America and are abundant on Sanibel. Read More »
We had a great turnout yesterday for the Sanibel Independence Day parade. As we do every year, VIP had a float and good representation. The theme this year was Sanibel – #1 Vacation destination. On July 2 the cutter Mohawk will be scuttled to become the Mohawk Veterans Memorial Reef dedicated to all veterans. Although the storm is far from us we are getting quite a bit of gusty winds and intermittent rain. The south west winds are forcing more water into the Bay which is then washing up on shore. Yesterday afternoon a Florida Fish and Wildlife officer was able to successfully tranquillize the black bear that has been on Sanibel for a year now. He had been roaming around the island more, presumably looking for a mate and was almost hit by a car on the east end of Periwinkle Wednesday night.
