This years state legislative session is attempting to pass legislation that would create a state model that would preempt or override local government’s ability to set their own fertilizer guidelines. This is a critical issue for Sanibel as fertilizer runoff has a very detrimental affect on the quality of our wildlife and waterways. Sanibel has a very strict ordinance and has led the way in encouraging other communities to create their own restrictions. I don’t have a problem with the state setting minimum guidelines, but they should not override local governments ability to enforce stricter standards.
