Temporary Closing of Shell Museum

 September is historically our slowest time of the year. The Sanibel Historical Museum has closed for the rest of the summer.  Now we hear that The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum will be closed September 21-October 4.  They will use the time to reconfigure the lobby and museum store, as well as upgrade some of the windows and entry doors to hurricane code. ... Sinkholes in Florida

With the collapse of the resort near Orlando yesterday, sinkholes are once again in the news.  This is a common phenomenon in many parts of Florida. They often form when rainwater dissolves limestone in the ground, leaving cavities beneath the surface. First Day of School

Today is the first day of school for Lee County students…seems like they are starting back earlier this year.  Collier County kids get a couple more weeks of vacation with an August 19th start date.  Slow down and drive carefully around our schools and bus stops. Read More »


Ding Darling NWR Update

On Monday, August 12th at 1:00PM there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the new Wildlife Education Boardwalk at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.  It connects the Indigo Trail to a gated fence at the side of The Sanibel School and will have a two-level observation deck.
