Sea Turtle Nesting Stats for Sanibel and Captiva

With all the rain and high tides we had earlier this summer, i was worried the nests might be flooded out, but the numbers remain strong. They are down somewhat from the same period last year, but that is a normal trend.

Here are the numbers so far this year:
Sanibel East End – 42 nests, 0 hatches
Sanibel West End – 223 nests, 4 hatches
Captiva – 98 nests, 5 hatches

And for the same period in 2012:
Sanibel East End – 64 nests, 0 hatches
Sanibel West End – 204 nests, 9 hatches
Captiva – 105 nests, 5 hatches.

The majority of the nests are loggerhead turtles, but Captiva and Sanibel West End do have a few green turtle nests.  The sea turtle nesting season runs through mid October so don’t forget to fill in and holes dug on the beach and remove all beach furniture at night.
