TIME TO GET IN SHAPE
How would you like to develop muscle strength and increased flexibility, improve posture and body awareness and learn how to move the body as an integrated whole? It’s exhausting just thinking of all that. But you can do it at the Sanibel Rec Center. They are introducing water pilates. Now you know it’s available so it’s up to you. You can do it. For more information go to www.mysanibel.com

FOR YOU BIRDERS

The Tarpon Bay Explorers have reported that some Osprey chicks have arrived in the nest at the Tarpon Bay dock. The eggs hatched in early March. This is the first time there has been an Osprey family on this nesting platform. Pretty exciting. So if you want more information go to www.tarponbayexplorers.com. We have also been told that the Snowy Plovers are back and nesting. There are four nests so far on Sanibel. None so far on Captiva. If you seek them out please proceed with care since they are a threatened species.

A WEIGHTY SUBJECT

Do you remember the weigh station that used to be on the causeway? The city gave it up after the Lee County officials said there was no room for it on the newly revamped causeway. The city leaders, at that time, couldn’t find an appropriate place to re-site it so it was demolished. Well, now in this tight money environment, the city is looking at the revenue potential it could represent. It went to almost $1 million at its high point in 2002. Maybe that’s why finding a suitable place for a new weigh station is now on the city agenda. We hope they succeed. That’s a weighty amount of revenue!

CROW

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) has been an asset
on the islands for 25 years. It has, in that time, grown from a patient load of 500 to over 4,000. In order to properly care for this growing patient population there has been an increasing need for updated facilities. There has been a new and vital education center recently opened that is designed to teach the island people about wildlife; there is a new state-of-art wildlife hospital, which is scheduled to open April or May; there’s a need to replace old cages with new, stainless steel cages; and there is always the question of adequate staffing. All of this means there is a growing need for the funds to support this caring and growing organization. If you would be interested in providing volunteer help and/or helping financially call 395-0050. They will be pleased to hear from you.

SUMMER IS COMING
And what are you going to do with the kids. You’ve got too much to do to have to worry about them
getting into trouble. Remember the nightmare you had about the kids building a campfire in the community center and almost burning it down? That was a tough summer! Well, this summer we have a plan for you that avoids bad dreams. Send the kids to the BIG ARTS Summer Art Camp. There will be painting, pottery, music and drama for the little ones and for the older ones there will be mosaic, fused glass, acting and improvisation and metal smithing. You can get details at www.BIGARTS.org.
